MY BELLS
For my costume, my robe would restrict the bells from ringing, if worn as a belt under the robe. On top of the robe, a belt would have restricted the flow of the fabric, which I loved. Consequently, I opted for a leather sash.
In my first costume, I purchased a long strap of black leather from Amazon. I also purchased small leather twine to tie them to the sash. I wasn’t sure how to acquire cowbells, so I found a wholesale website where I could buy a bulk shipment of new, black cowbells. I used a leather punch to make holes in the sash, and a riveter tool to place metal rivets. I tied the bells to the sash and was on my way.
After a few appearances, I wasn’t loving the look or sound of the new cowbells. For my look, I thought that Krampus might have just acquired bells along his journeys and added them to his sash along the way. So, I visited a lot of antique shops and flea markets where I found a lot of different, old bells. The Dusty Pug, in Bremerton, has also made sure to keep a steady stream of them for me, particularly as they find rusty old cowbells.
I’ve replaced my new, black cowbells with an eclectic mix of antique bells of all different pitches. You’ll now always hear Krampus approaching, before you even see him, with his ominous bells ringing in the distance.
I hope you’ll consider joining us for Krampusnacht Bremerton, whether you live in Bremerton, or not. Please also consider joining us for our Krampus Troupe Mixer and Maker events, for sharing ideas, making costumes, and planning for future activities.
